Faculty of Nursing and Students Union partnership benefits students
Her name is Noelle and she has given birth four times in the last hour. Chances are she will do it at least four more times before the day is over.
While Noelle has a pulse and blood pressure, she is also plastic and is just one of the new pieces of simulation equipment the Faculty of Nursing along with the University of Calgary’s Students’ Union showed off to the public on September 6th.
The new equipment was made possible through funding from the Students’ Union’s Campus Improvement Fund, part of the organization’s overall Quality Money Initiative. The Students’ Union provided $40,000 in funding to assist the faculty of nursing in purchasing the new simulation equipment.
Fourth year student Jenna Baumgartner, Nursing’s representative on the Students’ Union, submitted the application for the equipment to the SU and even helped choose the equipment. "The SU was really intrigued by the proposal and the benefit it would provide to nursing students," says Baumgartner.
"Technology is definitely transforming health care, not only on hospitals wards, but in the educational institutions where health care professions are taught," said Leanne Wyrostok, Nursing Skills Clinician. "The Faculty of Nursing plans to be part of this high tech revolution and, thanks to funds received through the U of C’s Students’ Union Campus Improvement Fund, it’s firmly on its way."
"The Quality Money Initiative is a valuable resource which assists the SU in improving the overall quality of life for students," said Brittany Sargent, VP Academic for the Students’ Union. "This latest funding is a great example of how the funds can assist in enhancing the quality of education for students here at the University of Calgary."
In total the Faculty of Nursing has purchased six simulation models geared toward creating a more confident and competent nurse and forming a foundation for what the faculty hopes will become a centre for high fidelity simulation.
Other simulation equipment purchased includes a virtual I.V., a new Stryker Stretcher and two airway suction trainers. To go hand in hand with the new simulation, the faculty itself funded four Computer on Wheels (CoWs) which will interface with the Calgary Health Region’s electronic patient information management system.
"We are very excited about the new simulation equipment and grateful to the Students’ Union for their support," said Leanne Wyrostok. "This collaboration allows us to move forward in our efforts to offer nursing students high quality training by utilizing the latest in technology."
The Students’ Union was very pleased to provide funding for this initiative through our Campus Improvement Fund," said Brittany Sargent. "Today’s demonstration is not only a great milestone for the Faculty of Nursing but also furthers the SU’s ongoing commitment to ensure students have access to the very best in academic resources here at the University of Calgary."
